The Third Chapter

Life can be thought of in three sections. Ages 0 to 30 are formative: we learn how to navigate our world. The years from 30 to 60 are generative: we find our path in life, be that career, family, or both. The Third Chapter, from 60-90 plus, can be a time to focus on who we truly are. Sociologist Sara Lawrence-Lightfoot has elucidated this phase as a time of "passion, risk, and adventure."

Historically, the years after age 60 were viewed as a period of decline preceding death. People did not live as long, and looking to the future seemed hopeless. Demographic changes mean that many more people work into their 70s, or even into the 80s or 90s. And retirees in their 60s likely have several more decades ahead.

What will you do with your Third Chapter? How will you make the most of this gift of time?
